I found this out through Kim Newman’s new book, which is a collection of short stories featuring Professor Moriarty and Colonel Moran having adventures that echo the famous milestones in Holmes’s career – chapter one has them forming their partnership, and shortly thereafter getting tangled up with Grey’s Mormons. (All the stories are crossovers – the title story’s “The Hound of the the D’Urbervilles”.) It’s an interesting book; the last chapter, “The Problem of the Final Adventure”, has an intriguing take on what really went down at the Reichenbach Falls.
